During the 3rd Global Digital Trade Expo, UCLG ASPAC, together with the BRLC and Hangzhou Normal University, convened the Digital Trade Innovation Development and Governance Symposium, with the theme of "Digital Silk Road: Digital Innovation and the Future Trade Ecosystem", on September 26, 2024 in Hangzhou. The event brought about 80 participants, including ambassadors, local government officials, the BRLC member cities and its stakeholders, scholars specializing in digital economy, enterprise representatives, as well as youth who are interested in the subject.
The symposium is composed of four parts: opening remarks, keynote speech, panel discussion, and signing ceremony. Mr Miao Chengchao, Vice President of the BRLC, presented the opening remarks. He acknowledged the crucial role that digital trade has played in economic growth, and the challenges it brought to the less developed countries and regions. He suggested to leverage the BRLC platform and its members advantages to promote collaborative innovation and cooperation in the field of digital trade among countries along the Belt and Road.
The keynote speech was delivered by Ms Chen Wenling, Chief Economist, Executive Deputy Director of the Executive Board, and Deputy Director of the Academic Committee at the China Center for International Economic Exchanges. Taking the topic "The Role of Platform in Reshaping the International Trade", Chen Wenling highlighted how protectionism has undermined the sound development of global trade, and explained why digital economy, platform in particular, is a game changer to all countries, especially for the developing ones.
The panel discussion explored strategies of promoting cross-national, cross-field, and cross-cultural exchanges and cooperation in digital trade. Maria Moreni, President of the Italy-China Link Association, Co-President of the BRLC, shared her experience in this regard. As the Director of the Foreign Affairs Office in Alibaba Group, Yu Bo offered his observations on Alibaba's participation in digital trade. He believed localization and regionalization is the key to embrace digital trade for it not only provides targeted business solutions to local markets, but also contributes to a diversified trade ecosystem.
The event also witnessed the establishment of the "Belt and Road Digital Trade Industry-Education Integration Development Alliance", a non-profit organization spontaneously supported by relevant enterprises, industry organizations, higher education institutions, and educational institutions in the field of digital trade from various countries. Initiated by the BRLC and Hangzhou Normal University, in collaboration with Alibaba Group and the Italy-China Friendship Association, the alliance aims to promote the development of the digital trade industry and the sharing of related educational resources, enhance the digital literacy and application capabilities of entrepreneurs, teachers, and students, strengthen digital trade policy dialogue and international cooperation, and jointly build a vibrant and resilient global digital trade sharing platform to promote high-quality development of the global digital trade industry and education.
