Secretariat of BRLC Invited to Online Workshop on Marine Litter Management

Online Workshop on Marine Litter Management was jointly held by 21st-Century Maritime Cooperation Committee and World Association of the Major Metropolises from August 25 to 27, 2021. Secretariat of UCLG ASPAC Committee on Belt and Road Local Cooperation (BRLC) was invited.

The workshop was consisted of six lectures and one summing-up discussion under the theme of Marine Litter Pollution and Its Treatment for Creation of Clean Blue Oceans. Octavi de la Varga, Secretary General of Metropolis, Ashok Kumar Byanju Shrestha, President of UCLG ASPAC, and Dr. Bernadia, Secretary General of UCLG ASPAC delivered speeches. “Marine Litter deters economic development and environment, even becomes threat for the survival of human being. It’s vital for us to carry out integrated solutions in Marine Litter Management.” said Octavi.

Government officials, experts and scholars from United Nations Environment Programme, Surabaya, Indonesia, Fuzhou Municipal Government, Ningde Municipal Government, Xiamen University, and Minjiang University shared their experiences in different fields. 30 cities and organizations as well as marine experts and scholars from 15 countries, including Indonesia, Korea, Nepal, Kenya, and Sri Lanka, took part in the workshop.


The proposal of setting up BRLC, within the framework of the World Organization of UCLG ASPAC, was jointly initiated by the Hangzhou Municipal Government and the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries. In May, 2017, it was inaugurated at the 1st Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, with the Secretariat of UCLG ASPAC committee on BRLC located permanently in Hangzhou. Since the establishment, committee has executed according to the mission of Openness, Cooperation, Sharing and Win-Win. BRLC, based within the framework of UCLG ASPAC, is to be committed to integrating the Belt and Road Initiative to various and practical programs and activities of exchanges and cooperation among local governments, providing opportunities in cooperation with regards to economic trades, cultural connections, social governances and other perspectives. Up to now, UCLG ASPAC committee on BRLC has attracted 77 members from 30 countries.
