by Representative Office of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade in Italy | 2021-05-28 23:55:00

Online seminar “China: A Different Truth” was successfully hosted by Italy-China Link Association (ICLA), a member of UCLG ASPAC Committee on the Belt and Road Local Cooperation (BRLC), and co-organized by the Representative Office of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade in Italy on May 18th, 2021. More than 10 China-friendly Italians, including scholars and entrepreneurs, gathered together to show the real China and the current cooperation between China and Italy to Italian people, refuting the recent false reports on China by some Italian media.

Co-President of BRLC and President of ICLA Maria Moreni, on behalf of Brescia, expressed her sincere gratitude to Chinese partners, including Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC), China Soong Ching Ling Foundation, and Bank of China Milan Branch, for donating medical supplies to local hospitals. Chinese friends also have given generous assistance and support all over Italy and even sent a medical group to guide Italian medical workers to cope with the pandemic.

Maria Moreni

Moreni said China has always been depicted as an attacker by western mainstream media, which is in fact a kind of prejudice. She started focusing her efforts on enhancing the communication between China and Italy since 2012 and has visited China for multiple times. The cooperation has always been transparent, stable and productive. ICLA, founded by Moreni, consists of Chinese and Italian members on a fifty-fifty basis. Aiming to enhance the communication and cooperation between the two countries, ICLA has established a partnership with BRLC, CPAFFC, Representative Office of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade in Italy, China Soong Ching Ling Foundation, and other organizations successively.

Moreni felt honored to get involved in such a great cooperation as Belt and Road Initiative. It takes “consultation, contribution and shared benefits” as the golden principle to enhance the cooperation between China and local governments of Belt and Road countries. At present, more than 100 countries have taken part in the initiative and made great achievements.

Real, peaceful communication is essential to the mutual understanding and benefit among different countries. As a result, Italians that have worked and lived in China were invited to portray a real China.

Lorenzo Riccardi, Managing Partner of RSA Taxation and a taxation teacher of Shanghai Jiaotong University, introduced “dual circulation” economic policy on the basis of his abundant experience in taxation and investment during past years in China. He introduced China's rapid economic development, huge economic scale, and the ranking of business environment through detailed figures and diagrams, emphasizing the importance of China in international trade and the many opportunities China has provided for the economic development of Italy.

Lorenzo Riccardi

Riccardi also looked back on the diplomatic history between China and small countries such as San Marino and Monaco, speaking highly of China's respect to small countries in diplomatic policy, regardless of the general impression for China as a great power.

Riccardi said that as China and Italy both rank first in the number of world cultural heritages – 55 each, it is reasonable to look forward to further cooperation between the two countries in the next China-Italy Year of Culture and Tourism (2022).

Carlo Capria, a former administrative official at the Office of Prime Minister of Italy, thanked China for supporting Italy with useful medical supplies and experienced medical experts after the outbreak. Looking back on the cooperation programs in tourism and technology between China and Italy in 2018 EU-China Tourism Year, Capria expressed his confidence in deepened cooperation between the two countries in 2022.

Capria also pointed out that Italy is now falling behind France and Asian countries on Chinese tourists' list of favorite destinations. With much room for improvement, Italy should strengthen the marketing and promotion of its tourism resources in China on enormous, powerful social network. Besides, Italy should learn from China's world-leading technological innovation and startup support. The Italian government should strengthen efficient governance to promote the sustainable development capacity and international competitiveness of Italy.

According to him, the enthusiasm of Italian cities, provinces and regions for cooperating with China is on the rise.
