President Xi Jinping will make a state visit to Vietnam from Tuesday to Wednesday, a trip that is expected to pave the way for further elevation of bilateral relations and expansion of cooperation in multiple sectors.
Xi, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, will travel to Hanoi at the invitation of Nguyen Phu Trong, general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee, and Vietnamese President Vo Van Thuong, according to the Foreign Ministry.
It will be Xi's second trip to the Southeast Asian country since 2017, when he traveled to the coastal city of Danang for a leaders' meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation and to Hanoi for a state visit.
The trip comes close on the heels of frequent high-level visits between the two nations this year, with the enhanced bilateral cooperation delivering tangible benefits to the two peoples, Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said at a news briefing on Thursday.
The strengthening of unity and friendship as well as deepening mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Vietnam is in alignment with the common interests of both sides, and is conducive to maintaining regional and global peace, stability and prosperity, Wang said.
During the visit, Xi will hold separate talks with Nguyen Phu Trong and Vo Van Thuong, and also meet with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Chairman of Vietnam's National Assembly Vuong Dinh Hue.
Wang said that both sides will explore the new positioning of China-Vietnam relations and focus on key sectors including politics, security, pragmatic cooperation, public opinion foundation, multilateral issues and maritime affairs, in order to deepen and solidify bilateral comprehensive strategic cooperation.
Analysts have highlighted the significance of the upcoming visit in bolstering ties between the two neighboring countries as this year marks the 15th anniversary of their comprehensive strategic partnership.
Zhai Kun, a professor at the School of International Studies and deputy director of the Institute of Area Studies at Peking University, said the visit will both carry forward the traditional friendship between Beijing and Hanoi and pave the way for stronger mutual political trust and heightened cooperation.
"Economic and trade cooperation could be a priority for the visit, as there remains immense potential for collaboration over infrastructure development and investment, especially in the alignment between the Belt and Road Initiative and Vietnam's Two Corridors and One Economic Circle plan," he said.
Zhu Feng, executive dean of the School of International Studies at Nanjing University, said the elevation of ties between China and Vietnam, a robust growing economy, will help both sides explore their respective paths to modernization and deliver more tangible benefits to the two peoples.
The upcoming visit will enable the two nations to better manage their differences and further ensure peace and stability in the South China Sea, he added.
